ODION IGHALO SET TO EXTEND MAN UTD STAY TILL JANUARY 2021 AS NEW LOAN DEAL IS AGREED

On loan Manchester United forward Odion Ighalo have agreed with his parents club Shanghai Shenhua to extend his stay at Old Trafford for another seven months. The Nigerian striker was supposed to return to the Chinese super league at the expiration of his loan deal this may ending but made a decision to stay till January 2021 at the dying minutes. The deal was closed following Manchester United's agreement to pay a revised loan fee to get the deal over the line on the day Ighalo's contract was due to expire. Earlier on Sunday, his agent Atta Aneke hinted that a deal was close by telling Norwegian outfit Nettavisie :  "We are nearing agreement with Manchester United on an extended loan. "The agreement will mean that Ighalo will remain with them until January 2021." The deal means he will miss much of the Chinese Super League season, which is due to start in July. EX-NNPC GMD MAIKANTI BARU IS DEAD

A former general managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Commission (NNPC) Maikanti Baru has been confirmed dead according to a report by Premium Times. The 60 year old Baru was said to have died on Friday night with location and cause of ailment unknown as at the time of filing this report. His death was announced early Saturday morning by the current head of the state-owned energy conglomerate, Mele Kyari. “My brother, my friend and my mentor, Dr Maikanti Kachalla Baru, immediate past GMD of NNPC died late last night,” Mr Kyari wrote on Twitter. “He was of exemplary character and disposition. May Allah forgive him and have mercy upon him.” Mr Baru was born in 1959 and led a career in engineering, rising through the ranks at the NNPC before he was eventually appointed to lead the organisation by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2016. Mr Buhari replaced Mr Baru with Mr Kyari in July 2019.

BRAZIL SURPASSES SPAIN IN THE NUMBER OF COVID-19 DEATH ROLLS IN THE WORLD

According to official reports on Friday, Brazil is now the fifth highest country hit by the coronavirus pandemic with 27,878 deaths surpassing hard hit Spain in the process. The country's ministry of health said that the South American nation, which is the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak in that continent recorded 1,124 deaths in 24 hours. It also had a record number of new cases - 26,928 in one day - bringing the total number of infections to 465,166. The United States, Britain, Italy and France lead the world in coronavirus deaths. As of Friday Spain had recorded 27,121 deaths, with virus fatalities there rapidly slowing. Brazil could soon surpass France, which has seen 28,714 deaths. Brazil is second in the number of confirmed cases, though trailing far behind the United States which has 1.7 million infections. FG To Pay Jobless Youths N20,000 Monthly To Sweep Markets, Clear Gutters

The Federal Government, in an attempt to mitigate the level of employment in the country, has rolled out a scheme which will see unemployed youths in rural areas earning N20,000 per month, according to reports by THE PUNCH. The youths will be engaged in the clearing of drainages, sweeping markets, road maintenance, traffic control, and cleaning of public infrastructures like health centres and schools. The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr Festus Keyamo (SAN), said this at a news conference on Thursday. Keyamo said the scheme targeted 1,000 youths each from the 774 local governments across the country. The minister said the programme is one of the biggest social intervention schemes to be carried out within a short period of time by any government in the history of Nigeria. The PUNCH reports that the scheme, known as the Special Public Works Programme in the Rural Areas, is domiciled in the National Directorate of Employment for implementation and is expected to take off

PREMIER LEAGUE TO RESUME ON THE 17TH OF JUNE

The Premier League season is set to resume on 17 June with Aston Villa v Sheffield United and Manchester City v Arsenal, according to BBC. The matches are the two games in hand. A full fixture list would then be played on the weekend of 19-21 June. Clubs are still discussing the idea at a meeting on Thursday, but it is understood all have agreed in principle at this stage. There are 92 fixtures still to play. The Premier League was suspended on 13 March because of the pandemic and it will be 100 days after Leicester City's 4-0 win over Aston Villa on 9 March that competition will resume, with games now behind closed doors.
