REAL MADRID CLINCH 34TH LA LIGA TITLE

Real Madrid clinched a record 34th la liga title with a 2-1 win over Villarreal on Thursday night.

Los Blancos entered the penultimate fixture of the season knowing that a victory will secure them the title.

Barcelona, their arch rivals needed to win their last two matches to have a chance to retain their crown.

With all except one fixture taking place at the same time, the news of Barcelona losing at home against Osasuna just within sixteen minutes couldn't have sounded better for Zinedine Zidane's men.

Probably buoyed by the news, the home side took the lead four minutes later when Karim Benzema fired a low drive into the bottom right corner after a simple pass from Luka Modric.

Benzema thought he had doubled the lead in the 77th minutes when Sergio Ramos passed a penalty to him but the goal was cancelled for early encroachment into the box by the Frenchman. He stepped up to convert at the second attempt.

Villarreal pulled one back in the 84th minutes through Vincent Iborra beating Courtois with a looping header to setup a frantic finish.

Thibault Courtois made sure the scoreline remain the same with a stunning double save to deny Villarreal in stoppage time as Real secured the title in style.
